Hi everyone! I started listening to CocoRosie on the car trip back home from Vermont. Sadly, I couldn't really hear because my cat was meowing and whining really loudly in my ear! I will start listening tonight and tell you what I think tomorrow.
Yesterday, I said I was going to tell you what I think. OK, here goes: CocoRosie is very odd. They have weird accents and their lyrics don't make a lot of sense. They sort of blab. Also, their songs can get sort of boring. Oh well.
Hi Grace! So are you going to stick with CocoRosie for the project? It will be interesting to find out if your opinions change over the 8 weeks of the project, but if you REALLY don't like them now, you might want to change to something else. Also, please write some info about them here!
Here is some info I found that I put into my own words: CocoRosie is a duo of 2 sisters named Bianca and Sierra. They were born in 1980 and 1978 in Iowa and Hawaii. Their mother was a teacher and artist and their estranged father was a teacher. When they were 3 and 5, their parents divorced. They did not get along very well when they were growing up. When Sierra was 14, she was kicked out of her mother's house and sent to boarding school by her father. She then lost contact with her sister since she changed schools almost every year. When Sierra was 20, she moved to Paris to study to become an opera singer. Bianca was studying linguistics and sociology in New York City and wanted to be a writer or artist at the time. She also collected tattoos. (I will continue in another comment.)
Here is my info comment continued: In 2003, Bianca decided to tour the world. She surprisingly showed up at Sierra's apartment. Then, CocoRosie began. They got the name "CocoRosie" from nicknames their mother called them when they were little. She called Bianca "Coco" and Sierra "Rosie." They found out that the bathroom in Sierra's apartment was the most soundproof and acoustic room in the apartment. They recorded 2 of their albums there. Sierra plays the guitar, piano, and harp. Sierra sings and manipulates various toys and percussion instruments. The intended the album as a gift to a small circle of friends, but a record label discovered one of their albums and published it. They became instant celebrities.
Good to hear more info about CocoRosie. They have a really interesting story, don't they? I've heard of other musicians who record in their bathrooms. Great acoustics in bathrooms! ;)
I'm really looking forward to hearing your listening example, Grace, 'cause I've never heard them before.
I usually do my homework or read while I'm listening to my stretch project music. This week, I'm going to try listening to my music while I'm on the computer and see how it goes.
OK, well I tried listening to my music while I was on the computer and I sort of forget my music was there until my cat started to play with my earphone cord thingy. Haha.
So Grace, do you usually forget the music is there while you're doing your homework/reading, too? Or was it something about being on the computer? Do you still not have a favorite song yet??
Hannah, While I'm reading/doing homework, the music serves a backround. I'm not sure what it is about the computer. And no, I do not have a favorite piece.
OK, I bought a few songs (for starters) from their 2nd album La Masion de Reve. It was one of the albums recorded in their bathroom. The name of the album is French and means, "House of my dreams." The songs still have odd but original and sorta cool lyrics and instruments and vocals are great. I might get some more songs/complete the album later.
For the 2nd half of the "add variety" stage, I will get a few more songs from La Masion de Reve. I will tell you how it goes after I buy the songs and listen to them. Catch ya later!!
I listened to the 2 songs from La Masion de Reve. One of the has really funny and random lyrics and the other one has boring lyrics but the vocals + instruments(especially the piano work) I liked.
For this week's assignment, I think I will share my music with my cat. My dad would not like the music and my mom has already heard it. (She put La Masion de Reve on her iPod.) My cat appreciates and reacts to music actually. If she likes it, she will stay where she is and if she really likes it she will sit down or sometimes roll. If she dosen't like it, she will leave the room.
I played one of the songs for my cat. When the song started playing, she walked over to her food bowl which was about 1 foot away and began to eat slowly. Her ears were foward and relaxed, a way of saying; "hey, this is pretty cool!" She seemed to enjoy the song because when it stopped, she jerked her head up from her bowl, flattened her ears, (a sign of confusion or distress) and looked around the room as if to say;"hey, where did the music go?"
Wow, Grace! I love the story about sharing music with your cat. I don't know many cats who react to music like yours. That's awesome. Do you like the new songs from Masion de Reve better than the other album?
Hannah: It varies. I like and don't like songs on both albums. I'm really glad we got to add variety to our stretch projects or else I might have never gotten listen to listen to any of their other albums.
OK, since this week's assignment is to reflect on the Stretch Project, I will do some think and prepare a comment for all of ya a lil bit late coz I'm about to have a really mushy dinner.(Having a pallete expander stinks. All of you who dont have one should be very grateful that the insides on your cheeks are not biten raw and you dont have a plastic thing glued to the roof of your mouth and that you don't have crazy wiring in your mouth and you can eat popcorn and candy and yummy stuff.) OK ill stop complaining now. :P
I think that the Stretch Project was really fun. It opened my ears to a WHOLE new genre of music, and made me more open-minded about music. CocoRosie is really unique and cool and without the Stretch Project, I might have never gotten to listen to them!! That would have been a sin!!!!! (Haha just kidding it wouldn't be but it would be sad.) Anyway, blogging was fun and interesting and I give it a 5 Star Rating!!!!!!!!!!

Hannah,
ReplyDeleteI think I'm going to stick with them.
Emily,
ReplyDeleteMy mom recommended it to me as a good stretch project. To answer your question, they play mostly alternative and freak folk.
great you like them
ReplyDeleteshe sounds good but
ReplyDeleteOops in my second info comment I made a mistake. I meant to say, "Bianca sing and..." instead of "Sierra sings and.."
ReplyDeleteOh and also I got my info from www.wikipedia.org which I really do not trust but I couldn't find info anywhere else.
ReplyDeleteIs alerneve like coledplay?
ReplyDeleteI guess alterinative is like Coldplay, except Coldplay does mostly rock.

I don't have a favorite piece. All the songs are sort of the same, so I can't really decide.
ReplyDeleteMaybe you can pick the one that gets stuck in your head. Or you can just pick a random one since you like them all the same.
ReplyDeleteHaha, Margot.
